The town of Tavistock has a place where bicycles can be hired and the equipment needed for safe riding. Rates are very reasonable. Contact Bassett Cars at Canal Road, Tavistock.
It is to West Devon Borough Council's credit that they have set out designated cycle routes throughout the area and they allow one to visit areas where the normal car user would not go.
Cycle down country lanes where the grass grows in the middle of the road, visit local beauty spots and enjoy the gentle pace of living that comes by using this mode of transport in West Devon.
There are routes that allow one to cycle right into the city of Plymouth, some 19 miles from the point where you hired your bike at Tavistock.
Don't expect to find too many local people cycling though - we are still in love with the petrol engine! Our county does have the largest roads network in the country though and perhaps that has got something to do with it. All roads in the UK are tarmac, even the country lanes. Quite nice for cycling...if you like that sort of thing!
Devon County Council do have a code of conduct about "off road" cycling and
it is best that you contact them on (01392) 490798 for details of this and
routes where this is acceptable of course. Further details concerning
this will be added when available.
Don't get any punctures!

Hundreds of miles of attractive 'people-friendly' town and country routes have already been built by SUSTRANS. On these routes, commuters, families, shoppers, tourists and children going to school can travel more safely and more healthily.
All that's needed to build this initiative into a comprehensive, 6,500-mile nation-wide network is the support of a substantial body of like-minded individuals who share this vision.
With YOUR help, SUSTRANS can unlock £42 million of Lottery funds, pledged by the Millenium Commission, to make this vision a reality.
